Without our researchers who volunteer four hours a week of their time into the program, our research simply would not be possible.
We value every student who wants to join the project for any reason.
Students DO NOT need to be science majors!! If you are interested in data, we have you covered. If you are interested in business, we can train you in inventory and ordering on the back end of the business. If you are interested in computer software, we have data being submitted into software that may spark your interest! We can accommodate you no matter what pathway you are pursuing! Reach out to eshufro@highlands.edu or slewis@highlands.edu for more information on how you can get involved.

Sydney Bryson (Fall 2021)~ "Hi, I'm Sydney Bryson! I am a Biology major. This research project is so exciting for me because it will allow me to combine lab experience with scientific knowledge, and hopefully make some headway in deciding a career! I've always loved wildlife, so I look forward to relating water quality with the impact on the surrounding environment."
Daniel Martin (Fall 2021)~ Hey! my name is Daniel and I'm majoring in Biology but will soon switch to environmental science. I'm hoping to transfer to KSU next fall and then get an internship at a state park and animal Sanctuary within the following year. I'm hoping to gain experience for future programs by doing this research program. Outside of school, I love to hike, play basketball, soccer, volleyball, and skateboard. I can be an impulsive buyer, so I tend to stay out of certain stores, or Atlanta entirely because I will easily drop $100 a night there."
Alan Jordan (Spring 2021 & Summer 2021)~ "Hello! My name is Alan. I am a 33-year old veteran who moved to Georgia in 2018. I live in Atlanta with my doctor wife and two dogs. I have always had an interest in how things work, and what better thing to learn about than the natural world around us. I am currently pursuing a Geology Degree at GHC, and I plan on continuing my education in Environmental Science and Ecology. LARG gives me an opportunity to engage in research I have an interest in under guidance from experienced faculty. I hope to continue to build the skills and breadth of knowledge that will serve me well in a future research science career."
Lauren Black (Spring 2020, Fall 2021)~ "My name is Lauren Black. I love nature and learning. More specifically, I enjoy learning about nature in general and how every element works together or against one another to create the world as we experience it. For example, tree growth is affected by nutrients in the soil, sunlight, or other factors. The presence or lack of something will impact. In essence, there are so many factors in nature that affect the world and each other. To further study how the elements in nature affect one another involves a chemical and biological stance. Because of my love for nature and my desire to learn more, my major is biochemistry. It combines the best of both worlds. Growing up as a child, I always questioned the way things were. I wondered why the sky was blue or why the grass was green. Biochemistry answers both questions and many more. The grass is green because it is a plant, and plants contain chlorophyll, which is essential for photosynthesis. The process of photosynthesis involves the knowledge of both chemistry and biology".
Madeline Choate (Summer 2021)~ "I'm Madeline Choate. I am a Cartersville, Georgia native attending GHC at the Cartersville Campus. I am interested in healthcare and serving my community. In my free time, I enjoy reading, music and traveling. I have spent many weekends at Lake Allatoona at summer camp, fishing, or boating. Many diseases stem from water quality and the Lake Allatoona Research Group is intriguing to me. I'm excited to get hands-on experience right in my own backyard at Georgia Highlands College."
Christina Wilson (Spring 2021, Summer 2021)~ "Hi, I'm Christina! When I'm not working or studying, I spend most of my free time watching moderately funny movies and painting abstracts that will never see the light of day. I'm a Psychology major. I'm graduating in summer 2021 and transferring to Georgia State University in the fall to earn my bachelor's degree. I joined this project to help further my knowledge of my environment and hopefully do something positive for our environment."
Cody Boazman (Summer 2021)~ "Hello, my name is Cody Boazman! I am a student at GHC. I found out about the Lake Allatoona research by the emails last semester and thought it would be a great way to get more comfortable in the lab. My plans after GHC are to transfer to KSU and get my bachelor's in chemistry."
Tyrell Bowens (Summer 2021, Fall 2021)~ "Hello! I'm Tyrell Bowens. I'm a biology major. I'll graduate in 2022. I joined the project to gain laboratory experience and this kind of work will help the environment and educate me on the work that environmental conservationists do."
Heather Choate (Summer 2021)~ "Born and raised in Cartersville, Georgia, Heather Choate received her Bachelor of Science with honors in Dental Hygiene from Georgian Highlands College in 2021. Heather is a non-traditional student, married with one daughter and pursuing a career change toward medicine. 'I love to travel and explore nature. Being a part of the Lake Allatoona Research is rewarding. I get to make an impact right in my hometown while learning and being conscientious to wildlife conservation, the environment, and the economy'."
Julissa Hernandez (Summer 2021)~ "Hi, my name is Julissa Hernandez. I am currently enrolled at GHC where I am studying to be an engineer. My goal year to graduate will be sometime in 2023. I want to further my education with hands-on experience in the engineering field while I finish my associate degree. I volunteered with LARG to give me the chance to experience more lab work. When the timing is right, I'd like to enroll for a bachelor's degree in environmental engineering."
Christopher Crowley (Spring 2021)" My name is Chris Crowley. I am a general studies major at GHC. I first learned about the Lake Allatoona undergraduate research project through my biology instructor. I can say without a doubt that this has been an incredibly challenging and fun experience. After GHC, I play to enroll at University of Georgia to study at Terry College of Business."
